Milestone #3: Back in 2006, EOMAP secured the first commercial contract for satellite-based seagrass mapping in the Brindisi region, together with ILF.

Mapping Posidonia oceanica

The focus was on Posidonia oceanica, a vital and protected seagrass species endemic to the Mediterranean. These underwater meadows play a crucial role in marine ecosystems and carbon sequestration.

For the planning of the Trans Adriatic Pipeline at that time, obtaining reliable data for environmentally responsible routing was essential. However, traditional seafloor mapping methods, such as ship-based surveys, are time-consuming and involve high costs.

Pioneering Satellite-Based Seafloor Mapping

This pilot project marked a major breakthrough. For the first time, high-resolution satellite data mapped seagrass habitats reliably. The project proved that non-invasive, scalable mapping from space is possible.

Up to this point, bathymetry was only derived from hyperspectral airborne data. This project showed that bathymetry data can also be derived from satellites. In addition, it marked the extension of EOMAP’s physics-based approach to include multispectral satellite data.

From Pilot Project to National Scale

What started in Brindisi has grown into a national-scale initiative across 8,000 km of the Italian coastline. Since 2024, Fugro and we have been part of an international consortium led by ISPRA, the Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research. This time, we provide satellite-based mapping of key seagrass species to support restoration efforts and blue carbon assessments.

50% of the stakeholders identified mapping inaccessible locations as the main reason to apply Satellite-Derived Bathymetry. (Innovation project ‘4S’)

For our clients and partners, the reliability of our SDB data is a fundamental prerequisite for integrating it into their shallow water surveys, models, or coastal planning and engineering.

In general, the ability to map the seabed depends on the environmental conditions at the time of satellite image recording, and so does the overall quality of these measurements. Therefore, we provide some facts and (simplified) details about horizontal and vertical accuracy of our SDB measurements and how we manage uncertainty.

What about horizontal accuracy?

The horizontal or geo-positioning of SDB depends on the spatial resolution of the satellite sensors and is up to 2m. We make sure to remove effects from water refraction or terrain bias to minimize positional uncertainties.

Vertical uncertainties

Depth or vertical uncertainties are of highest interest to bathymetric users. Basically, there are standard statistical methods to describe the uncertainties: The LE90 level indicating that 90% of all data fall within this category, and the root mean square error (RMSE). As the LE90 is more relevant for our users, we return information on this as standard feedback. Over the years, we have found that 0.5m plus a depth dependent factor of 10% gives a very good global approximation of the vertical LE90 uncertainties.

Is it that simple?

Of course not. In addition, seabed coverage, water turbidity, tidal uncertainties, and other effects impact uncertainty. For this reason, we provide pixel-specific uncertainties for each depth measurement.

What about client data?

Can we use client data to improve and verify SDB? Yes, we can and are happy to do so! For this purpose, a detailed validation report and statistics will be included. Furthermore, there is an interesting validation option, even if you don’t have any data: We leverage active green laser depth measurements to verify our results, and it comes with detailed statistics on how accurate it performs.

Validation studies

Although our physics-based image processing is based on 30 years of development and can be applied independently of in situ depth information, we continue conducting validation studies to further improve our algorithms and SDB apps. Here are two recent examples:

A very comprehensive study of this sort was part of the “4S” project, in the framework of which we developed the web app SDB-Online. In this study, SDB results are validated at ten different sites, ranging from the higher latitudes of Canada to turbid UK waters to the Caribbean. SDB was validated against Lidar and MBES data. The project team published the details of this analysis in the peer reviewed ‘International Hydrographic Review’.

Atmospheric correction (AC) for water bodies is key to ensure standardized and high-quality outputs. In 2024, 21 European scientists evaluated AC as the core of our “MIP” methodology in the framework of the EnMAP mission. In this intercomparison between three AC methods covering 17 water sites, our “MIP” showed superior results. Read more on the study published in “Optics Express”.

SDB Update No. 7 takes us to one of the northernmost tropical waters: The Red Sea. Learn about this topobathymetric model, for which we have combined Satellite-Derived Bathymetry (SDB) and Digital Elevation Models. Such high-resolution digital twins of coastal waters can benefit coastal protection, infrastructure planning, and safe navigation.

Ideal conditions for SDB in the Red Sea

The Red Sea is a fascinating natural asset: 25% of its mostly very clear waters are less than 50m deep, making them a perfect playground for SDB. Beyond that, the tropical waters are the habitat of 1,200 species and 200 types of corals. The rich diversity of the Red Sea is in part due to the 2,000 km of coral reef extending along its coastline; these fringing reefs are 5,000–7,000 years old.

In addition, the Red Sea is one of the saltiest bodies of water in the world, owing to high evaporation, low precipitation, and high temperatures in the south. This high salinity effect is reduced by the fact that the Red Sea exchanges its water with the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean via the Gulf of Aden.

Entire Red Sea mapped in 5 – 10 meter resolution

In late 2024, we fully mapped the shallow waters and coastal zones of the Red Sea in high resolution. For this SDB grid, we have applied Copernicus Sentinel-2 and Airbus SPOT 6/7 sensors. Here are some more facts and figures on this:

The bathymetry data is available in a resolution of 10 meters, the land digital elevation model in 5 meters.

Around 1,000 Sentinel-2 images were processed to increase the extent, accuracy, and quality of the SDB data.

37 stereo image pairs were utilised to generate a DSM/DTM covering over 8000 sqkm of the coastal terrestrial topography.

The result is a combined topo-bathy dataset for the entire Red Sea Saudi EEZ, reaching 3km to 5km into the land and down to 20m on the seaward side

For reef protection and infrastructure planning

Such a topobathy model is fundamental for understanding coastal areas along the Red Sea. It provides

a valuable dataset for managing and protecting the reef ecosystems and strengthening coastal resilience,

key information for sustainable infrastructure planning along the coastline, and

hydrographic data to foster safe navigation, given the fact that nautical charts have so far been very coarse in many places.

In addition, the combined topo-bathy dataset will allow for (flash-)flood and sea level rise risk assessment.

In this SDB Update No. 6, we are focusing on topobathy models – essential tools for tracking coastal change with high precision. By merging land elevation and bathymetric data into seamless grids, topobathy models provide a full picture of coastal dynamics both above and below sea level.

Topobathy data can guide adaptive responses

According to the IPCC, nearly 11% of the global population lives in low-lying coastal zones less than 10 meters above sea level. This makes them especially vulnerable to flooding and permanent inundation.
Accurate, high-resolution topo-bathy data is essential not only for modeling these risks, but also for guiding adaptive responses in vulnerable areas. However, when powered by Satellite-Derived Bathymetry (SDB), they also enable

regular, scalable monitoring of shorelines,

nearshore morphologies,

and underwater features.

These capabilities are especially critical given that climate change accelerates sea level rise and intensifies storm-driven erosion.

Topobathy models up to 50cm-resolution

At EOMAP, we can construct use case tailored satellite-derived topobathy models which range from 10m up to sub-meter spatial resolution for either or both the topography AND the bathymetry. Not only are these models insightful and informational but also mesmerizing to look at. The image shows Shusha Island in Saudi Arabia, an island in midst coral reefs of the Red Sea.

In its final declaration, the recent UN Ocean Conference in Nice acknowledges the critical need for accounting and mapping of coastal and marine ecosystems, and of the ocean floor.

Smart mapping of marine ecosystems

When it comes to efficient technologies to achieve this goal, SDB is high up on the list. With many of our SDB projects, we contribute to global initiatives, such as Seabed 2030, EMODnet Bathymetry, or GEBCO – General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans.

Although SDB enjoys wide acknowledgement among ocean mapping experts, we still encounter knowledge gaps. Through the EOMAP storymap “Unveiling Depths – A Journey to SDB” we wish to support a deeper understanding of this innovative technology in an enjoyable way.

If you wish to explore the innovative, yet established mapping technology even in more depth, here are two recommendations:

➡️ The peer-reviewed paper “Satellite-Derived Bathymetry Online” in the International Hydrographic Review. It reports on SDB validation results in ten focus areas with different tidal regimes, water clarity conditions, and latitudes. The paper also introduces a global map of water-clarity potential for the application of SDB.

➡️ The SDB Best Practice Guide by International Hydrographic Organization (IHO): The document of 2024 provides an overview of methods and factors to consider when applying SDB to map shallow coastal environments. In addition, it provides a framework for collecting, processing, analysing, interpreting, and sharing data.

Like the Bahamas (see SDB Update 2), the Maldives is highly attractive to tourists, welcoming 1.5 million people per year. Yet, the inhabitants of the Maldives are not only aware of the beauty of their islands, but also of their vulnerability.

In this context, the Maldives spearheads a group of small islands and low-lying coastal countries that face unique environmental challenges, especially related to climate change: the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) and Small Islands Development States (SIDS). Their concerns will be addressed at the UN Ocean Conference 2025 in France, where our colleague Mona Reithmeier will join a panel about “Powering Progress: Data, Skills, and Technology for the Ocean” on 11 June.

Largely unmapped with ideal conditions for SDB

In fact, 99% of the Maldives Republic’s territory is made up of the sea. However, most of the shallow waters there have not been mapped so far. The turquoise ponds around the often tiny islands offer high water clarity and ideal conditions for SDB.

SDB is a sound basis for understanding the Maldives’ shallow waters. It supports

Australia offers ~36,000 km with a further ~24,000 km of island coastlines. These coastal areas are fascinating, extremely manifold, and often highly dynamic. We have now completed SDB-mapping of the shallow waters “down under” in 100-m resolution. The continent is surrounded by the Pacific, the Indian, and the Southern (Antarctic) Oceans, and the shallow waters offer both challenging and ideal conditions for SDB:

High-wave areas

Rocky and sandy coasts

Coral reefs

Varied tidal ranges, including +10 m tides in the Northwest!

Clear and turbid waters

Strong sandbank dynamics, calling for frequent monitoring

Our SDB activities ‘down under’ go a long way and include various ‘firsts’:

>> In 2009, we were the first to map Ningaloo (Nyinggulu), the world’s largest fringing reef in Western Australia in very high resolution.

>> In 2013, we provided the first very high-resolution SDB covering the entire ‘unmappable’ Great Barrier Reef.

The pilot areas within COASTS have an immediate demand and support the project: “Areas like the Maldives which face severe threats from climate-change related impacts need actionable data and targeted risk intelligence. And we need this fast. We expect COASTS to strengthen evidence-based decision-making around coastal developments, facilitate impact-based early warnings, and provide an understanding of the potential of nature-based solutions for blue carbon ecosystems“, explained Nashwan Matheen of the Maldives Space Research Organisation (MSRO).

“Coastal biodiversity is heavily affected by global change. These habitats play a central role, as they also serve as blue carbon storage. By providing in situ data on seagrass habitats in Germany, Jersey and on the Maldives and their health, we aim to enrich the modelling capacities of COASTS and drive restoration efforts worldwide”, said Philipp Schubert of the scientific diving group Submaris.

In addition to supporting data-driven sustainable decisions on coastal ecosystems, the in-depth analyses of COASTS are set to encourage new business models on emerging blue carbon markets. This can open new income sources for countries with blue carbon ecosystems.

“By leveraging our Geo-data expertise, we are advancing next-generation coastal mapping, modelling, and monitoring through the COASTS project. We believe these comprehensive insights will not only support policy updates but also open new markets and enhance coastal resilience in some of the world’s most vulnerable regions,” stated Pooja Mahapatra of Fugro. As global pressures on coastal environments continue to mount, the project team strives to ensure that the world’s coastlines remain resilient and capable of supporting both biodiversity and local communities.
