EOMAP presents the global bathymetry project at the Ocean Decade Conference in Spain
Session 3 / Challenge 8 will cover a Digital Representation of the Ocean.
EOMAP will present at the UN Ocean Decade Conference on 10-12 April in Barcelona. The event will cover the full range of ocean-related topics, including critical global challenges such as
🌍 climate change,
🌍 food security,
🌍 safeguarding biodiversity,
🌍 sustainable ocean economy,
🌍 pollution, and natural hazards.

In his presentation, Knut will talk about our contribution to the Ocean Decade by the global coastal bathymetry project, in which we partner with Deltares and GGS Geo Consultancy (GGSgc).
So, how can this project help solve the above challenges? – Well, coastal areas are home to billions of people and centres of manifold other human activities. But they are also known to be biodiversity hotspots, often underestimated carbon sinks, and particularly vulnerable to environmental changes. Their high importance stands in contrast to the lack of knowledge and existing monitoring routines on a global scale.
In the global bathymetry project, we will now provide global coastal bathymetric data to fill this knowledge gap and enrich the Copernicus Marine Service.
Bathymetry – the underwater topography – is a key environmental parameter for a wide range of coastal applications, such as modeling and hazard assessment, seafloor classification, and quantifying habitat loss or carbon storage capacity. The overall target of the project is a more sustainable management of coastal zones.
